Range Setup Guidelines, Safety and Et

Target Spacing & Safety

General Guidelines

  • Everyone is a safety. It is the responsibility of every archer to be on the watch for risks.
  • Use common sense. If it looks unsafe or possibly risky, it probably is.
  • Speak up. Communication is key. Talk to other range users and convey concerns.
  • Safety is not about skill. All archers must follow safety guidelines.
  • One shooting line. Targets can be moved, but all shooters must use the same shooting line

Individual Practice

  • When fewer than 4 targets are in use, targets can be spread across the field for independent use
  • With sufficient spacing, archers may shoot and retrieve arrows while others are shooting
  • Further targets require more spacing
  • Targets can be staggered, but avoid blind spots

Controlled Shooting Lines

  • When more than 4 targets are in use, range users must confer on the range layout
  • Targets should be arranged closest to furthest from left to right (i.e. furthest distance on the east)
  • With sufficient spacing, users can shoot and retrieve independently
  • Targets may be grouped close together and the range divided into separate lines
  • All users on the same line must shoot and retrieve together
  • Users sharing a line must agree on the number of arrows to be shot (e.g. 6 arrows)
  • For large groups, a director should be nominated to control the line

Etiquette

  • Shoot the agreed number of arrows per end
  • Don’t rush other users.
  • Don’t leave other users waiting
  • If you are delayed (e.g. receiving instruction, adjusting equipment), let other users retrieve arrows
  • When bringing out targets, check with other users to see if you need to rearrange the field
  • If you need to cross the field (e.g. to search for arrows), notify other users before moving across
  • You are encouraged to share targets - not everyone needs to have their own target

Shooting line

At peak times the shooting line can become quite busy. When busy, if possible please position your target in the field so that if you are shooting short distances (10-20m) you are to the left and if you are shooting larger distances 40m+ you are to the right, with 20-40m being between the two, please see image below for clarity.
